Núcleo de Investigação em Microeconomia Aplicada
Applied Microeconomics Research Unit

NIMA was created in September 1999 at the Economics and Business School, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, in order to facilitate research and research collaborations in applied microeconomics.

NIMA’s core activities focus on the following research areas:

  • Experimental Economics
  • Health Economics
  • Environmental Economics
  • Economics of Information and Regulation
  • Labor/Education Economics
  • Microeconometrics and Game Theory

The research areas under NIMA share the same theoretical framework (microeconomic theory), and the same research methods (experimental economics and microeconometrics). Thus, the same theoretical and methodological setup is applied to the examination of specific problems afflicting the health, environmental, educational, and telecommunications sectors of the economy. These research areas are not only at the forefront of economic knowledge, but are also of utmost importance for the design of effective policies to address the main concerns society faces today.

Because focused and organized research in these areas is not ensured elsewhere at the Minho University, NIMA has also been decisive to the introduction of these areas in the curriculum of teaching programmes in economics at all levels at the Minho University, thereby promoting the dissemination of these research areas and engaging a vast community of students in learning and researching in these areas.

Since its creation in 1999, NIMA's research activities have been positively evaluated, and therefore funded, by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
